A brief guide to each barcode type

Retail barcodes

• EAN-13: A 13-digit numeric barcode widely used in retail worldwide for product identification. It is the standard “international” retail barcode and includes a check digit.
• EAN-8: A shorter, 8-digit numeric version of EAN-13, designed for small packages where there is not enough space for a full-size barcode.
• UPC-A: The classic 12-digit retail barcode used mainly in North America. It encodes product identification in a fixed-length numeric format with a check digit.
